#FullStackPDX : October : Critique

Who are we? We are entrepreneurs, full stack engineers, hackers, continuous learners, but above all, we are a group that loves to work hard and play harder. We organize a variety of content types, and the organizing team believes in delivering the best value for time invested in our events. Companies have launched, founders paired, code taken apart, lessons learned, and more. We are not the typical meetup where a teacher like presenter stands in front of the class and delivers their message. We are a full hands on interactive experience and meetings are successful from the cumulative knowledge and expertise of all members.

Join us for something different.

Join us to learn.

Let’s have fun building our dreams.

OTBC: Speed Dating for Startups
OTBC [Old location, do not use!]

What: Speed dating for startups When: Saturday, Feb. 28, 1pm to 3pm Where: OTBC Cost: Free

At our "Finding Founders" brown bag lunch, there was a lot of interest in a Startup Speed Dating process. So we're doing it! Do you have an idea for a startup and you're looking for founders who can get as excited about your idea as you are? Are you looking for an early stage startup to join - even if the compensation up front is sweat equity instead of salary? Then this event is for you.

Send us your Idea If you have an idea for a startup, we encourage you to give use some hint of what it is (even if you need to be vague) so we can post the info and help you generate some interest. Please use the form at this link and we'll read it, maybe provide some feedback, and get your idea posted online. (If you don't want to reveal anything about the idea online, at least consider talking about what skill sets you'd like to add to the team so readers will know whether or not there might be a fit.)

See concepts others have already posted at this link.

Agenda for Feb. 28 After some networking time, we'll have each idea person looking for a team give 2 or 3 minute elevator pitch, have each of them head to their own corner of the room, and let people circulate around to check out the startups that sound interesting to them.

If we get a lot of ideas, we might have to split this up over more than one event and feature a specific list of startups at each one - we'll see how it goes.

So mark your calendar, RSVP, and start honing your idea. We hope to see you on Feb. 28!

Startup Law 101: When does a startup need to call a lawyer?
PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

Sledgehammer: When does a startup need to call a lawyer?

And when can a startup get by without one? The members of PIE invite you to join them for a great session on understanding better when and when you don't need a lawyer.

We have invited one of the tech startup industry's best law firms to come and talk to the entreprenuers in Portland's startup scene. Neil Nathanson from the Portland office of the leading startup law firm Perkins Coie, will talk about the critical points in a startup's lifecycle where having your own legal sledgehammer is essential. Also joining him will be Jeff Bock, addressing licensing and intellectual property issues and Neil addressing corporate and finance issues. He will also cover what sort of services and counsel you can expect from a law firm and then be open for a Q&A session.

The event will start at 6pm, but the doors will open around 5:30 with pizza available.

There is no fee to attend - but please only register if you intend to come so we can have enough food.

TiE Oregon: Semiconductor Entrepreneurship - Opportunities & Challenges
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium

What are the challenges facing semiconductor startups in today’s environment?

Is it enough to have developed a great technology?

Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?

Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?

Our panel, constituted of Steve Sharp, Chairman Triquint & past CEO of Triquint Semiconductor, Howard Bubb, CEO Ambric & Manpreet Khaira, CEO Avnera will address these and other important issues related to the viability of the fabless semiconductor startups in the new millennium.

The panel will be moderated by Scott Keeney, CEO & Co-founder nLight, a manufacturer of semiconductor lasers

Portland Digital eXperience (PDX)
through Various

First and foremost, we wanted to showcase Portland and folks that champion Portlandy ideals. I’m lucky that, for the most part, I get to sit back and watch all of the amazing stuff that happens in Portland. And I consistently revel in the awesomeness that people here are building. With PDX, we wanted to showcase that almost frenetic variety of creativity in our town. But we also wanted to bring in folks who subscribed to common ideals. That’s why, in addition to some amazing Portland people, you’ll find folks like Tumblr and Flipboard on the docket.

Second, we wanted this to be a true creative festival atmosphere. One of things we wanted most was to make this a festival of creativity, with some of that being creative applications of technology and some of that being the creative spirit of the music industry. That’s why MFNW and PDX are inextricably linked. And it’s also why we’ve got speakers with a foot in music and a foot in tech, like Spotify, Shazam, CASH Music, and Tender Loving Empire.

Third, we wanted to create something intimate, inspiring, and invigorating. Many of us remember the serendipitous experiences of conferences like SXSW and Big Omaha. We wanted to capture that same kind of experience, bring interesting speakers, and get interesting folks in town for the event. Our goal is to have you sitting next to someone you never imagined having the opportunity to meet. Or getting the chance to chat with an amazing panelist at one of the concerts. Or simply running into someone on the street at the food carts. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll get to spend a little more time chatting with awesome Portland people whom you never get to see.

Last but not least, we wanted PDX to provide a good excuse for people to visit Portland. Especially for those folks who are actively considering Portland for the next phase of their business or career. You see, sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live where we do. And to work here. But rest assured, there are any number of people and companies outside looking in. And this is a great opportunity to showcase what we’ve got here.

Technology Association of Oregon Marketing Forum: Hey, What's the Big Data?
CrowdCompass office in the Ford Building

Hey, What’s the Big Data? How business intelligence is determining design, development, and marketing decisions

It’s time to say goodbye to old school analytics, and hello to big data. Big data involves huge data sets, coming in at different speeds, from all directions. Everyday, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data online. All that data (a quintillion has 30 zeros) comes from social media, digital pictures, purchase transactions, and elsewhere on the web. This kind of data sinks traditional database systems. To analyze the data, we need fancier systems. That’s why IBM Watson won Jeopardy, but Siri continues to drive us crazy with her analytical shortcomings.

Predictive analytics can figure out how to land on Mars, but it cannot predict who will buy a Mars bar. What gives? Luckily, marketing automation tools from companies like Eloqua and Marketo are changing the game.

Join us for a dive into the sea of data. This panel examines how understanding and working with data will optimize business actions in real time.

You will: •Learn how humanizing data will help maintain a competitive advantage •Find out why big data isn’t just for big companies •Hear case studies of companies who are successfully interpreting data to predict the needs of their customers, increase purchases and save money •Listen to thought leaders and get ahead of the big data wave

Innovation in Motion Panel @ Innotech
Oregon Convention Center

“Where should innovation start?”

The majority of business leaders do not recognize the value of IT in innovation.... Meanwhile, some companies make use of technology trends, including big data, social, and mobile. How does data, development, and design influence the maturity of tech innovation? How does one area influence the other two and where do great ideas begin?

Join us as we walk through a number of innovative case studies of innovation. Some started with data, moved to development and were later marketed to the masses. Others started with development and marketing, leaving design as an afterthought. The products are interesting, and the individual approaches are fascinating.

Innovation in Motion members will be allowed to attend this panel at the InnoTech Conference for FREE. RSVP on this Meet-up page and your name will be add to the guest list for this panel at the InnoTech Conference.

David Steinberg, VP of Business Alliance from the Internet Marketing Association

Oregon Innovation Academy Launch and Unconference
Franklin High School

The Innovation Academy is bringing together students, teachers, and working professionals from the Northwest’s technology industries to empower students with new skills sets of the digital age.

Teams will work collaboratively to build software applications and other technology-‐based solutions that solve real world problems that exist within our community. The solutions that will emerge from these teams will be known as "Innovation for the Common Good."

The region’s first "Innovation Academy will be launching at Franklin High School Saturday, May 18 from 2-‐5pm. The launch will offer students the opportunity to form project teams that will meet over the summer to work on their projects with industry mentors. New solutions in areas such as education, the environment, energy and public safety will be explored.

Attendees at the launch event will preview a new community safety mobile app that is being developed by a team of Franklin and Wilson students working with industry experts and the Portland Police Bureau. Designed to improve communication and collaboration between district police officers and the neighborhoods that they serve, the new mobile app is an example of the kind of impact student-‐based innovation can bring to Oregon.

All students, teachers and technology industry professionals are welcome to participate in the launch event. Once teams have been formed and projects are begun, their solutions will be demonstrated in a large community celebration when the school year resumes next fall.

High School Musical my ass, how about High School Startup? Or Junior High Startup? Reserve your spot today for The Dog Ate My Startup next Wednesday evening at NedSpace 5th Avenue, third floor, doors open at 5pm, event starts at 5:30pm

Seating is limited.

Colby Aley is a 16 year old web developer, High School student and entrepreneur. He enjoys working with early stage startups, going from nothing to launched product. His influencers include Sam Soffes of Nothing Magical and Maciej Ceglowski of Pinboard.

Jackson Gariety attended Grant High School 2009 to 2012, he started doing freelance web design in early 2009. His first clients were local businesses and slowly grew his abilities and network to pay for better design and development tools. In 2012 he started working with Brian Hendrickson to build a social web platform called HashTraffic which has been developed and is currently being sold. He also teaches a class on app development.

Andrew Oesterreich is a 12 year old 7th grade entrepreneur who attends Wood Middle School in Wilsonville. He started out by doing odd jobs for his neighbors then moved on to giving younger students drum lessons. Last fall, he ventured in on a duct-tape wallet business with 2 friends. It wasn't long til half of the school had a shiny new duct tape wallet. He loves shark tank and is always looking for new businesses to create.

The emcee for The Dog Ate My Startup and open QA event is the always funny, the sometimes sober, and the ever flatulent John Friess, founder and CEO of Journey Gym.

Doors open at 5:00pm for networking

through MercyCorps & Eliot Center

This November, the Social Venture Society will host the second Hacking Social Impact unconference, a collaborative and educational event addressing impact investment and social entrepreneurship. As in 2012, the two-day event will feature hands-on workshop, interactive discussion sessions, and networking.

Participants will not only have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the table, but to engage in direct, powerful and informal discussions on the topics which will shape the socially-driven entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist.

Last year, we had a tremendous experience hosting impact community members and learning with and from folks from Ecotrust, Immix Law, Springboard Innovation, B Labs, Grameen Foundation, Mercy Corps Micro Mentor, p:ear, PSU Impact Entrepreneurs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Social Venture Partners, Startup America, and many more.

Schedule & Details:

On Monday night (5:30 - 8:00), we will have a kickoff reception at MercyCoprs.

Tuesday will be a full day of sessions, workshops, connecting, discussing, and hacking, held at the Eliot Center from 9:00-5:00.

TiE Panel: Founders' Funding Stories
TiE Pearl Incubator

We often see headlines like these:

  • "Verizon Investments Leads Funding Round in MobileRQ"
  • "OpenSesame Lands $8M"
  • "OnTheGo Raises 700K Seed Funding from Foundry Group's AngelList Syndicate"
  • "AppThwack gets backing from In-Q-Tel"

If you are an entrepreneur pitching at pitch competitions and to groups of investors, an outcome like that can often seem like a pipe dream. You might think it's just a question of luck, or that you just have to have a lot of passion for your idea; but it takes the right combination of factors to make such deals happen.

The basic premise is obvious: investors want a return on their investment. But how do you get introduced to the right investor for your company? What is going to convince them that they will get a return on the investment? How do you negotiate the deal?

One great way to get answers to some of these questions is by hearing the stories of founders who have received funding in the last 6 months.

Join us for a panel discussion on closing a round of funding with the founders of the very same companies that featured in the headlines above! Don't miss this opportunity to learn from these entrepreneurs' experience and meet and ask them your questions!

Our panelists are

  • Tyler McKinley (CEO/Founder of MobileRQ,
  • Josh Blank (SVP/Founder of OpenSesame),
  • Ryan Fink (CEO/Founder of OnTheGo Platforms),
  • Trent Peterson (Co-Founder of AppThwack)

The discussion will be moderated by Monica Enand (Founder/CEO of Zapproved, TiE Charter Member).

PIE application deadline (EXTENDED due to technical glitch)
Online

At PIE, we like startups. It’s why we started this whole experiment in the first place. So, whenever we have the chance, we opt for using startup products as part of our process. Whether they are PIE companies or not.

We just like supporting startups.

Most of the time, taking these calculated risks is positive all around, for both PIE and the startup. But every once in a while we encounter some issues.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing an issue on the application platform we tried out for this class. A handful of folks have reached out to us, seeking confirmation that their application went through, as they did not receive the confirmation email. When we went searching, those folks didn’t turn up in the database.

Cue cold sweat.

We’re still working to diagnose the problem. And applications have officially closed. But given the issues, we are now put in the uncomfortable position of having to ask these already overtaxed entrepreneurs to resubmit their applications.

For more information, see the PIE blog.

PDX Hardware Startup Meetup
PSU Business Accelerator

Summer is officially come to an end, so it's time to start back up the PDX Hardware Startup Meetups. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their summer and is ready for the rain.

The next PDX Hardware Startup Meetup is going to be October 28th, at 5:30-8:00 PM.

R&D Plastics is a local Plastic Injection Molder and is going to come talk about plastic injection molding. Here is an abstract of their presentation:

"As a new or infrequent designer/developer of injection molded products it can be very difficult to understand the impact of design features, material selection, and tool construction on the cost and lead-time of your products. The decisions you make have a great impact on part cost and tool build lead-times.

In this session, we will discuss what to expect when designing and developing a plastic injection molded part. We will provide examples that show the impact of good design decisions and how they greatly improve the product development cycle. Your understanding of the injection molding workflow and what you should expect from your injection molding partner will guide you through good decision making for a successful product release."

Charlie O’Bosky & Kyle Tarr will be joining us and giving the presentation.

As always, there will be free Pizza and Beer provided for everyone and some time to share any projects you are working on.

Location: PSU Business Accelerator. 2828 SW Corbett. The building can be tricky to find, and the best way to get directions is to use the intersection of "SW Corbett & SW Meade", that way Google Maps won't take you on a wild goose chase.

Parking: It's FREE. You can park anywhere behind the building for free. There should be plenty of parking so don't worry about having to pay for a spot.

Branding for Brainiacs
PDX Code Guild

Space is limited; RSVP http://bit.ly/1DQml6c

Startups are in the air! The Portland Startup scene is booming, Portland Startup Weekend is weeks away, as is Global Startup Battle..

In celebration of you, the innovators behind the movement, PrestoBox and PDX Code Guild present Branding for Brainiacs.

Startup founders rule. You are ready to reinvent the world with your brilliant idea for a startup. But to get your business off the ground you need to connect with customers. You need a brand.

A brand is what the outside world thinks of you. It’s communicated in everything you do - from how you answer the phone, to the colors on your homepage, to the logo on your door. You need to figure out what you stand for and how that walks and talks.

Your customers may care less about the nuts and bolts of your business than your colors.

Did you know… 92.6% of people say that visual dimension is the #1 influencing factor affecting their purchase decision?

People make a subconscious judgment about a product within 90 seconds of viewing? Up to 90% of that is based on color!

Come to this workshop to learn how to build your brand, including: - How to choose your colors - How to choose your fonts - How to choose your images - How to develop your voice - How to build your logo - How to build your website, business card & other branding elements

Walk away from this workshop with: - Your brand personality - Tools to build your brand and win business - The ability to think like a creative (even if you’re not)

This workshop is presented by PrestoBox, the world’s first automated branding agency. What used to cost thousands of dollars and take months of time now can happen at the snap of your fingers. Have questions about Branding for Brainiacs? Contact sheri@pdxcodeguild.com

A chat with Saul Colt, the Smartest Man in the World
Centrl Office

Well, it's been quite a May for Portland. First, President Obama swung by. And now, the Smartest Man in the World, Saul Colt will be in town, too.

Only Saul will be way more accessible.

Who is Saul? In his career he has been named as one of the iMEDIA 25: Internet Marketing Leaders & Innovators as well as been called one of Canada’s best community builders/experiential marketers. NYT Best selling author and Internet Pioneer Chris Brogan once referred to Saul as “exactly who you want representing your company” and that message has been echoed by media properties ranging from Inc to Forbes Magazine.

In a previous life Saul was the first international employee of Zipcar and the person responsible for launching Zipcar into the Canadian marketplace, was a key person in the growth of FreshBooks.com (The #1 Cloud Accounting service for Small Business Owners) and even knows what it is like to work for a large corporation from his time in a leadership role at Rogers Communications. On top of all that Saul is also a Professional Speaker and Consultant specializing in Social Media, Customer Service, Community Building and Word of Mouth Marketing.

Whether you're an early stage startup or a well established business, Saul's unique perspective will have you rethinking how you spread the word about your company. Even if you don't care about marketing, he's just a great and entertaining speaker.

eBay Tech Tuesday: Reality (Usually) Bites
eBay Community Lounge

The (mostly) unspoken reality of startups is that success is the rarity. So, when you’re fighting the battle every day to make things work, yet only hearing about Company A getting yet another round of capital, or Business Z being acquired, it’s easy to feel like you’re a failure.

But your success doesn't have to look like everyone else's. Which is good, since it probably won’t. And honestly, sometimes failure isn't so bad.

This month’s Tech Tuesday is about the difficulties faced in building, launching, and keeping a startup afloat. We’ve put together a panel of local entrepreneurs who will be sharing their stories, talking about the struggles they’ve faced as founders, and discussing what they’ve learned so far.

We’ll also have an Advisor to numerous startups sharing his perspective, insights, and tips.

Panelists:

• Kevin Dewhitt, Founder, PDO Technologies, Inc

• Josh Carter, CEO/Co-Founder, Plunk

• Paul Wagner, CEO/Co-Founder, CloudEngage

• Paige Hendrix, Founder, ClientJoy

• Dylan Boyd, Advisor

Moderator:

• Sara Morrow, Talent Partner, eBay Marketplaces

The combined backgrounds, experience, and personalities of our panelists should provide for a fun, interesting, and educational evening. I hope you’ll join us!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/1e02bPw

  • Pizza and sodas will be provided

  • Doors open at 5:45pm, Presentation begins at 6:30pm

  • The main lobby doors lock at 7pm. Someone will be available to let you in after 7pm, but please plan accordingly.

Wasted food comes at an enormous financial and environmental cost. In the US, food is the largest single source of waste.

  • 40% of all food never makes it to the table. That's about 20 lbs per person per month at a cost of $165 billion each year.
  • 30% of all food, worth $48 billion, is thrown away annually.
  • Food production accounts for approx. 16% of energy use, 50% of land, and 80% of freshwater consumed.

We're bringing together local experts to discuss how they are fighting wasted food by working with farmers, distributors, and foodservice providers. Learn about the creativity, complexity, and technology involved in their solutions as well as opportunities to continue to address waste in our food systems.

Panelists:

  • Claire Cummings is the Waste Guru at Bon Appétit Management Co which provides full-service restaurant management and operates over 650 cafes. Claire manages the Imperfectly Delicious Produce program which works with farmers, distributors, and chefs to save cosmetically challenged produce from going to waste.
  • Brennan Hogan is a Marketing Manager at LeanPath which provides automated food waste prevention solutions for operators of all sizes. LeanPath was founded in 2004 by a team of Portland-based entrepreneurs and enables clients to cut kitchen food waste by 50% or more and up to 6% on food costs.

Startup Weekend Vancouver - Community Pitch Night
The Oregon Public House

Enjoy a fun evening meeting other entrepreneurs, and learn to give 1 minute pitches in a safe environment.

Pitching is an important skill to succeed in life and in Startup Weekend. When you're meeting people for the first time, its important to be able to introduce yourself and make a good impression in a short amount of time.

How it works:
Arrive early, at 6 pm to register and mingle. At 6:45 we start with group introductions. Then at 7, we'll split up into small groups of 4. Everyone in the groups get to give one minute pitches, followed by 4 minutes of Q&A / coaching from peers and mentors. After everyone gets a turn, we'll split up the groups again, and the fun starts over. By the third round, everyone is guaranteed to be able to pitch like pros!

Don't forget, the Startup Weekend starts on Friday January 29th. www.bit.ly/swvanwa

Stories from the Hardware Startup World w/ Joe Grand (aka Kingpin)
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC

Join us for our first Hardware Massive Portland event with guest speaker Joe Grand, a legendary hacker, product designer, and the founder of Grand Idea Studio, Inc.

Formerly known as Kingpin, Joe was a member of the influential hacker group L0pht Heavy Industries. He co-founded @stake, an information security firm later acquired by Symantec, and Chumby Industries, which produced one of the first intentionally open and hackable consumer devices. He was a co-host of Discovery Channel's Prototype This, an engineering entertainment program that followed the real-life build process of a unique prototype each episode, and has been a technical advisor to many hardware startups, including MakerBot and Crowd Supply.

Never one to follow the status quo, Joe has successfully forged his own path doing what he loves to do - hacking, engineering, and teaching. In this session, Joe will share uncensored stories of his experiences being part of, working for, and advising startups. He'll talk about the importance of finding the right people, focusing on a market, choosing funding, and building a business based on passion, not fueled by a quest for fame or riches.

SPONSORS:

• Food & Drink are sponsored by Crowd Supply, the crowdfunding platform for hardware startups.

• Venue is sponsored by JLR Tech Incubator. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) operates the Open Software Technology Center (OSTC), a unique state-of-the-art facility in Portland that focuses on In-Vehicle Infotainment.

SCHEDULE:

• 6:00-6:30 Networking with beer, wine & light fare (vegan friendly)

• 6:30-7:00 Opening Remarks & Demos*

• 7:00-7:45 Building Hardware Startups w/ Joe Grand

StartupBus 2016: Portland stop
DeskHub Portland

Equal parts hackathon, road trip and global community, StartupBus is a life accelerator that skyrockets you to your greatest potential. It’s an initiation into a community of over a thousand people who are on the same journey to greatness, on and off the bus.

Will StartupBus be uncomfortable? Yes, comfort and growth don’t coexist. Will you have to fight off ravenous, battery starved techies to charge your devices? Yep. Will there be consistent Internet? Yeah… probably not.

Will it be the single greatest adventure of your personal and professional life? Ab-so-effing-lutely.

One more question, but only you have the answer.

Are you crazy enough to jump on a bus conceive, build and launch a startup with a group strangers in 72 hours?

Small Business Funding (Lunch+Learn) Seminar for SBIR Grants by Oregon Best
DeskHub

Calling on tech entrepreneurs for a small business funding seminar! Are you looking for funding for your proprietary technology? Please sign up!

Oregon Best funds and supports cleantech startups and we are hosting a series of small business funding seminars for SBIR/ STTR grants.
This is a Lunch + Learn event - sign up here - best $10 you'll ever spend! 12 - 1:30pm Tuesday May 24th.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lunch-learn-small-business-funding-seminar-tickets-25210896470

We will start with a 10 min overview Oregon Best and what we do ( and explain what cleantech is) followed by a 30 min in-depth SBIR/ STTR presentation by expert Leon Wolf.
We will give you an overview of the process, understand eligibility requirements and give free support in applying for grants for appropriate companies.

Many people get confused by the word cleantech. We want to clarify and shed light on the wide range of technologies that fall under this category.

The hope is that more people will:
a.) see themselves and their tech as possibly falling under the "cleantech" umbrella
b.) contact us about their technology c.) seek eligibility and support in applying for an SBIR/ STTR grants.

Oregon Best invests at very early "risky" stages - before the technology has been proven.
We then support startups in several ways by:
a.) Investing between $50k - $250 per startup
b.) Making Introductions / networking with key partners
c.) Funding interns to work in their company d.) Connecting co's to an experienced CEO or Entrepreneur-In-Residence to help them navigate growth, priorities, business plans, pitches e.) Help with manufacturing / scale up through our partnerships f.) showcasing the company at conferences, trade shows and BESTFEST g.) Support with Government grants SBIR/ STTR

Please register to attend! Lots of great information to learn about and resources to help tech startups.

A Portland community effort to help those affected by the Intel layoffs
Falcon Building

By now, you've heard the news about the layoffs occurring at Intel, Oregon's largest employer. And now Jive, as well. Nearly 800 people from our community are now in the midst of searching for new jobs.

But you know what? In Portland, we have never been a community that shies away from making the best out of every situation. Or from supporting one another. And that's not going to change anytime soon. Especially now.

That's why a bunch of us are banding together to figure out ways to help those folks affected.

Why? Because we're a community. And this is what communities do.

Refactoring for Asynchronous Execution on Mobile Devices
CENTRL Office

To improve responsiveness, developers often use asynchronous programming architecture. In the post-PC era, asynchronous programming is even more in demand because mobile and wearable devices have limited resources and access the network excessively. One current development task is refactoring long-running, blocking synchronous code (for example, accessing the Web, a cloud, a database, or a file system) into nonblocking asynchronous code. Danny will guide us through the challenges of retrofitting code from synchronous to asynchronous while presenting program analyses as well as showcasing a growing, practical tool set for this process.

Hack the Dot: PDX Startup Week
Vacasa

A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, marketers, designers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community.

There will be pizza. And beer.

What to Bring / How to Prepare: • Bring your laptop (fully charged). Bring your charger just in case. • Install the Atom text editor. Go here: https://atom.io/ • Setup a github.com account

How does it work? Step 1: Attendees are broken up into random teams and assigned spirit animals to guide their efforts. Step 2: The teams are provided with the same undisclosed domain name by Name.com, arbitrary and often hilarious. Step 3: Teams have just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domain. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins.

Participants will be judged on four criteria: (1) functionality, (2) design, (3) humor, and (4) creative domain name interpretation.

What do you get at the event? FOOD! SWAG! FRIENDS!

How much does it cost? It’s FREE!

Questions? Send them to HacktheDot at name.com.

Woman Led Unconference (woman led startups)
NedSpace Broadway

The Woman Led Unconference will sell out again, don't be left out because it's sold out.

Also, early bird tickets are just $25, but go to $40 effective March 1st.

WOMAN LED, INC. A 501 (c) (3) Organization is hosting Portland’s second women’s Unconference revolving around the theme of Women Entrepreneurship.

  • Saturday March 11th, 9:00am-4:00pm
  • Attendance is limited to the first 50 people, sorry
  • Early bird ticket pricing is $25
  • Ticket prices $40 effective Wednesday March 1st

What is Woman Led?

Our mission is to empower a community of women led companies to build profitable and sustainable businesses that will positively impact the economy. Our vision is to be a national organization that provides professional services to women who Dare, Dream and Do. We will become the most trusted community that supports women business owners in the United States. We will create a business world where women entrepreneurs have equitable opportunity, support and success.

For more info, find us at: http://womanled.org/

Why an Unconference?

Women in Portland are boldly pursuing their entrepreneurial dream. Yet they stall before they achieve scale. One in eight (12.5%) female owned businesses have successfully scaled. This is 2 times lower than male owned businesses. We have uncovered three key barriers to women achieving their entrepreneurial aspirations – Identifying Resources, Lack of Mentorship, and Less Funding / Sexist Culture. The women’s unconference will provide resources and networking to help overcome these barriers. The Facilitator Megan O'Leary the Director of Member Services from OEN is going to facilitate the whole unconference event. A great experienced facilitator makes the event, so prepare yourself for a wonderful time.

What will our Unconference look like:

9:00am-9.30am Coffee & networking 9.30-10am Keynote speaker 10:00-11:00am Overview and group agenda setting 11:00-11:45am Session 1
 11:45am-12:30pm Session 2
 12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch

1:30pm-2:15pm Session 4
 2:15pm-3:30pm Session 5
 3:30pm-4:00pm Closing & Keynote

Lunch is included. So, what exactly is an ‘Unconference?’ Think of this as an open conference that is driven by its participants. Unlike traditional conferences, an unconference allows for flexibility, open discussion, and debate, all fueled by its attendees. Innovative conversations with some of the brightest people, important purposes and tasks discussed without any formal agenda, and unplanned dialogue led by ultimately what peaks your interest most.

Come to build a collaborative network, establish partnerships, and be in a close community of people that value the same or similar topics of discussion. The sessions will be broken up into 30-minute discussions and spaces are reserved for gatherings that happen throughout the day.

Who should attend? Whether you’re a CEO, a startup founder, stay-at-home mom with a new idea, allies, or simply just have interest in the topic of women entrepreneurs, we welcome you to join us. This event is open to all genders to attend and participate.

All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.

Special keynote guests Sara Batterby CEO & President of Hifi Farms & Jill Nelson, Founder & CEO, Ruby Receptionists
